Male Domestic Abuse During the Coronavirus Lockdown

I am writing to you on behalf of AMIS, a registered Scottish charity that supports men who are or have experienced domestic abuse. We are reaching out to raise awareness, and to protect and support men across all of Scotland's local authorities.

Lockdown is an especially difficult situation for anyone in an abusive relationship. There are many hundreds of men across Aberdeenshire who are currently receiving no support. There will be many men who are yet to recognise the abuse or are suffering in silence, even in your ward. We must care for the mental and physical health of everyone.

With your help, we can support these men and their families. You may already be familiar with our services, but here's how we can offer support:

  • Our free and confidential helpline – 0808 800 0024 (9am to 4pm, weekdays)
  • We offer high-quality, ongoing support to any man in Scotland that is in an abusive relationship.
  • Email support – support@amis.org.uk
  • Men can email us at any time. This is also confidential and preferable for many who cannot call us, including those with hearing impairments.

We work with any man who lives in Scotland and is over 16 years old, inclusive of transgender and non-heterosexual men. Anyone concerned about a man can also use our services to get information and advice.

We used to offer highly rated face-to-face support but are not currently receiving any significant donations or government funding to continue this service. However, our helpline and email support are still running and are ready to help.

If you can, please publicise our services to protect the men in Aberdeenshire:

  • Share our social media profiles on your community accounts (Facebook and Twitter)
  • Inform anyone you think might be vulnerable of our services
  • Put AMIS on Aberdeenshire Council's website support services list
  • Print our posters off for local communities (see website)

Resources can be downloaded from amis.org.uk/resources.

Together we can create a happier and safer Scotland for everyone. Please let me know if I can help in any way.

All the very best,

Aiden Pacey
