Facebook Marketplace Scam

In the last week we have seen numerous North East residents being ‘scammed’ when buying and selling high value items online via social media markets in recent weeks.

Genuine sellers are often contacted by scam 'buyers' looking to purchase an item, often high value electronics or designer items. (Recently it has been predominately mobile phones)

The 'buyer' sends the seller a FAKE image of a payment notice on their phone which fraudulently confirms payment. This could be from a site such as PayPal or even a screenshot of a bank transfer.

No money has actually been transferred and the seller has become a victim of fraud.

People are often enticed by high value items being sold at ‘bargain’ prices. This involves the scammer being shown a FAKE proof of postage, in order for you to send money, however the goods never arrive.

Crime Reduction Officer PC Irvine advised:

"Always check you have received payment using your own device prior to handing items over and do not be pressured into giving items without receiving the money. Where possible, meet the seller in person in a busy public place, before exchanging goods or money. Be suspicious of all ‘too good to be true’ offers and deals. Never send money to anyone you don’t know or trust, whether in the UK or abroad, or use methods of payment you’re not comfortable with."

Call 101 to report fraud or 999 in an emergency.
